Meta Keywords Tag

Definition

The meta Keywords tags are HTML tags that allow you to specify keywords for your website. Keywords are essential to the proper functioning of your web page, as they enable search engines such as Google to index and rank your website.

The keywords meta tag is located in the head section of your page’s HTML code. It is important not to confuse the meta Keywords tag with the meta description tag. The meta description tag provides users with a brief written description of the content of your page. The meta Keywords tag, on the other hand, is not directly visible to the user and provides a list of keywords relevant to your site.

Syntax of a meta keywords tag

Like the vast majority of metadata, the meta keywords tag begins with the name of the “meta” tag and contains the “name” attribute with the value “keywords”. Finally, the list of keywords should be inserted in the “content” attribute and separated by commas.

How important is the meta Keywords tag in SEO for Google?

Unfortunately, the keywords meta tag is no longer of any use for Google search engine optimisation. This information was confirmed in 2009 by Matts Cutts, one of Google’s first engineers, in an article published on Google Search Central, “Google does not use the “keywords” meta tag in web rankings“.

There are a number of reasons why the keywords meta tag is no longer useful for Google’s search engine optimisation:

  1. The meta Keywords tag is not a reliable and accurate indicator of the content of a page.
  2. The meta Keywords tag has been misused by SEO professionals as “keyword stuffing”.
  3. Google’s ranking algorithm does not take the meta Keywords tag into account.

If your aim is to optimise the natural referencing of your web page on Google, the meta Keywords tag will be of no use to you. Instead, concentrate on creating and developing a good content strategy for your site, an in-depth study of your keywords, or a solid backlinks strategy.

Does Google penalise the use of meta Keywords?

The second big question surrounding these meta Keywords tags is whether their use can be harmful to a website.

The answer is simple: No. Using the meta Keywords tag does not lead to any penalties from the search engines.

It is simply an invisible element in the eyes of the search engines and the user.

What about other search engines?

The misuse of this tag has also led to other search engines gradually ceasing to take it into account. Today, the meta Keywords tag is ignored by almost all the major search engines.

Bing

Bing no longer takes Keywords meta tags into account. Microsoft’s Christi Olsen confirmed this in 2020 in one of his tweets:

“The meta keyword tag is dead in terms of SEO value for @BingWMC. We exclude it and ignore it.”

Yahoo

As for Yahoo, the American search engine officially announced at the SMX trade fair in New York that the meta Keywords tags no longer carried any weight in website referencing.

Yandex

According to the support pages of Yandex, one of the biggest search engines on the Russian market, it would still be worth using the meta Keywords tag on their search engine.

If you are targeting the Yandex search engine, it is likely that the use of meta Keywords tags will improve your ranking.

Baidu

Baidu is China’s Google, with a market share in China of over 60%. In 2018, several SEO experts published a blog post, citing the post of a Baidu engineer who claims that his company has not been using keyword meta tags since 2012.

How do I find a meta Keywords tag?

To find your meta Keywords tags or those of your competitors, simply right-click on the page and select “Inspect”.

A new tab will open in Chrome. The top or “head” of the page is where the meta tags are located. This is where you’ll find the page’s meta Keywords tag, as well as the tittle, robots and description tags, etc.

Best practices for using meta keywords?

Even if they have become very unimportant for the referencing of your web pages, there are still a few good practices to be aware of when using meta keywords tags:

  • Between 10 and 15 keywords maximum.
  • Avoid repeating words.
  • All your keywords should be separated by a comma.
  • Diversify your keywords as much as possible. The meta keywords tags for each page should only contain keywords specific to the content of the page in question.
