Creating and configuring a property in Google Search Console

Google Search Console can be a very valuable tool for anyone who wants to improve their online visibility through SEO. Whether it is to measure the results and performance of his site in Google or to find technical improvements, Google provides a lot of useful information through this tool. A real toolbox is essential for any SEO or webmaster, let’s discover together its different features.

Warning: it is important to know how to differentiate Google Analytics and Google Search Console which are complementary but very different.

Note: If you already have one or more properties with data, you can directly skip the creation step.

Add a GSC property

First, let’s start by looking at how to access this data. To do this, go to the following page and, once logged into your account, click on Add a property, from the drop-down list at the top left, as shown in the following screenshot:

Then, you will see that you have 2 tracking options: the domain or the URL prefix. For optimal tracking, we recommend that you choose the domain.

Domain vs. URL Prefix

In summary, domain tracking will allow you to have information on all URLs of all subdomains of all protocols (HTTP & HTTPS).

As you can see, if you only use one sub-domain and one protocol, the 2nd option will still allow you to have almost all the information about your site in relation to its visibility on Google.

Share access

If several people need access to a property, it is not necessary that each one gets validated. It is possible to easily share access with a person who would have gone through one of the previously mentioned validations. This person will then become a delegated owner.

To share access, just go to Settings in the left menu, and then click on “Users and authorizations" under “Property Settings". After that, you have to click on “Add a user" in the top left corner and 2 pieces of information are requested:

– The email of the person to invite
– His/her access can take one of the 2 following values: Full access or Limited access.

It is not possible to designate a user as “Owner". Indeed, to become a confirmed owner and to be able to access the user management, you must go through one of the validation methods.
