Creating and Configuring a Google Search Console Property

Part 1: Creation and configuration

Add a GSC property

Google Search Console / Analytics login

Sharing access

Note: If you already have one or more properties with data, you can skip the creation step.

Add a GSC property

First of all, let’s see how to access this data. To do this, go to the following page and, once logged into your account, click on Add Property, from the drop-down list at the top left, as shown in the screenshot to the right.

You will then see that you have 2 options for tracking: the domain or the URL prefix. For optimal tracking, we recommend that you choose the domain.

Domain vs URL prefix

In summary, domain tracking will give you information on all URLs of all subdomains of all protocols (http & https). In contrast, tracking a URL prefix will limit you to all URLs of a single subdomain and protocol.

As you can see, if you only use one sub-domain and one protocol, the 2nd option will still allow you to have almost all the information about your site in relation to its visibility on Google.

Methods of validation

The 2 types of properties also differ in the validation method. The tracking of an entire domain only accepts one possible method, validation by DNS, whereas the URL prefix can be validated in several ways: adding an HTML file to the root of your site, using an HTML tag, going through Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager or, again, going through DNS records.

In both cases, the methods are precisely explained by Google in its documentation, so you should easily find all the information you need to validate your sites.

Google Search Console / Analytics login

Coupling Search Console data with Analytics will allow the two platforms to exchange data. Thanks to this, you will be able to obtain information on landing pages, countries, media or even Search Console queries in your Analytics tables.

To make this link between the two, simply follow these steps :

  1. From Google Analytics, click on “Administration” at the bottom left of your screen and then on “All products” in the Properties column (the middle one) ;
  2. Find the “Search Console” property in the list, and press the ” Link Search Console” button ;
  3. Then, several prompts will appear in front of you and invite you to select the Analytics property and the Search Console entity to be associated with each other. Once the association is made, you can check both on Analytics (All products) and on Search Console (Settings then Associations) that it is the case.

Sharing access

If more than one person needs access to a property, it is not necessary for each person to validate the property, it is possible to easily share access for one person who has gone through one of the validations mentioned above. This person will then become a delegated owner.

To share access, simply go to Settings in the left-hand menu, and then click on “Users and permissions” under “Property settings”. After that, you have to click on “Add a user” in the top left corner and 2 pieces of information are requested :

  • The email of the person to be invited
  • The type of access, which can be one of the following two options: Full access or Limited access.

It is not possible to designate a user as “Owner”. In fact, to become a confirmed owner and to be able to access the user management in particular, it is necessary to go through one of the validation methods.
