Link juice

Definition

The link juice, also called ” SEO juice ” or ” referral juice “, represents all the beneficial effects that a backlink can bring to the site to which it points. This concept is closely linked to the mechanisms for evaluating websites by search engines.

In concrete terms, if a site A obtains a backlink on a site B with good SEO metrics, then this site B will transmit its popularity to site A. It therefore brings it what is called good link juice.

Importance of link juice in SEO

Link juice is important in the SEO of a web page. Indeed, when a site receives a backlink from another domain with good SEO metrics, it benefits from its popularity with Google. This allows it, in turn, to move up in the search results, and thus gain credibility and visibility.

How link juice works

To receive link juice, you only need to receive a dofollow link from another site. It is therefore important to check, when you obtain a link from another website, that this link is not nofollow, i.e. that the “rel” attribute of the link’s html tag does not indicate the value “nofollow”.

It is important to bear in mind that the more dofollow links there are pointing to different sites on a page, the more diluted the link juice that each site will receive. This is called the link juice dilution principle. In practical terms, if there are three dofollow links in addition to yours on the same page, you will receive four times less link juice than if you were the only link positioned on the page.

How to maximise this link juice?

Multiplying the sources of referral juice

The more backlinks you have placed on different domains, the more link juice you accumulate. Indeed, the different sources of link juice add up to form an aggregate link juice whose size is proportional to the number of dofollow links received. It is therefore worthwhile to receive a large number of inbound links to increase the size of your link juice.

Transmission of link juice

The juice obtained from an isolated site does not have the same impact as that obtained from a site which itself receives a lot of juice from external sites. Indeed, link juice is transmitted in succession from one site to another.

Let’s take for example three sites, A, B, and C. Site A makes a dofollow link to B, which in turn makes one to C. The link juice given by A to B will then indirectly benefit site C.

To optimise the link juice obtained from an external site to which you have placed an inbound link, you can take actions aimed at increasing the link juice received by this same site. To do this, you can seek to obtain new backlinks to this external page, as the resulting link juice will enable you to receive more link juice.

Conducting a netlinking campaign

Conducting a netlinking campaign is the best way to get quality link juice. Indeed, a netlinking campaign aims to increase the number of backlinks pointing to your site.

You must first identify the sites capable of giving you popularity. For this, you can use SEO analysis tools such as SEMrush or Ahrefs. You also need to ensure that your netlinking campaign is consistent: don’t order too many links at once, have a consistent number of backlinks in relation to the size of your site, etc.

Using guest blogging

Guest blogging is writing articles for external sites in exchange for a dofollow link to your site in those articles. However, make sure you find blogs with good SEO metrics that accept guest posts.

What is a quality link?

Do not have too many of them

It can be tempting for a webmaster to try to get as many backlinks to his site as possible to maximise link juice. However, having too many backlinks can be detrimental to a site if we are not careful.

Indeed, it is important to have a good number of dofollow links to your site, but it is advisable not to be in excess or risk being punished by Google. You should always make sure that your SEO technique looks natural. For example, if you are a small blog with a low profile, and you start receiving a lot of links, it will not look natural, and you risk being punished by Google.

In addition, you must be careful about the quality of the inbound links you receive. There is no point in receiving a large number of them if they are not of high quality. It is better to focus on the quality of your backlinks if you want to benefit from powerful link juice.
